Gold Faces Heavy Selling Pressure as Prices Fall Below $4,000

0

Spot gold came under significant selling pressure this week as shifting market sentiment and changing interest rate expectations weighed on prices. On Thursday, international spot gold plunged 2.78%, touching a low near $4,018 per ounce. The decline continued during Friday’s Asian trading session, with prices briefly falling below the psychological $4,000 threshold, signaling a clear deterioration in short-term market sentiment. Safe-haven demand and expectations for monetary easing, which had previously supported gold’s rally, have come under pressure as investors reassess valuations and the metal’s near-term outlook.

The US dollar and Treasury yields remain key drivers of gold prices. As gold is denominated in US dollars and offers no interest income, a stronger dollar or rising Treasury yields generally increases the opportunity cost of holding the precious metal. If markets scale back expectations for Federal Reserve rate cuts or anticipate that interest rates will remain elevated for an extended period, gold could face further downward pressure. In particular, when inflation data come in stronger than expected, market repricing of the monetary policy outlook can intensify short-term volatility across precious metals.

The substantial gains accumulated during gold’s previous rally may also have amplified the latest correction. After an extended advance attracts significant momentum-driven buying, a shift in market expectations can trigger a wave of profit-taking. If key technical support levels are breached, stop-loss orders may be activated, accelerating the sell-off. Under these conditions, falling prices may not necessarily reflect a fundamental deterioration in gold’s long-term outlook, but could also result from position adjustments, liquidity changes and the withdrawal of short-term speculative capital.

It is important to note that gold’s safe-haven status does not guarantee that prices will rise during every period of market uncertainty. When liquidity becomes scarce, investors may sell gold to cover losses elsewhere or meet margin requirements. Furthermore, if safe-haven demand simultaneously strengthens the US dollar, gold could face additional pressure. The current decline may therefore reflect not only changing risk sentiment, but also the combined effects of the dollar, real interest rates and capital flows.

From a technical perspective, the $4,000 level carries considerable psychological significance. Gold’s brief move below this threshold has increased pressure on bullish positions. If prices remain below $4,000, the market could test lower support levels. Conversely, a swift recovery above this threshold could indicate that some of the immediate selling pressure is easing. However, specific support and resistance levels should be assessed alongside real-time prices, trading volume and subsequent price action. A single break below a round-number level is not sufficient to confirm a long-term trend reversal.

Looking ahead, investors will focus on upcoming US inflation, employment and economic growth data, as well as Federal Reserve officials’ comments on the future path of interest rates. If economic indicators remain strong and expectations for rate cuts weaken further, the US dollar and Treasury yields could continue to weigh on gold. Conversely, signs of a significant slowdown in economic activity could revive expectations for monetary easing and provide some support for the precious metal. Geopolitical risks, central bank gold purchases and global capital flows will also remain important factors shaping its longer-term outlook.

Overall, gold’s consecutive declines and brief break below $4,000 reflect a broader reassessment of interest rates, the US dollar and risk assets. Price volatility may remain elevated in the near term, but it is important to distinguish a technical correction from a lasting change in the broader trend. Gold’s ability to stabilize will depend largely on movements in the dollar and real yields, as well as whether sustained buying demand returns to the market.
